MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit User-Agent: Internet Messaging Program (IMP) 2.3.7-cvs X-Originating-IP: 63.205.16.204 Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I finally found what I think was a good buy in a laptop, a compaq 1701 PIII 850, 30 GB, 256 MB, 14" 1024x768, 5 lbs for $1,600. Out of the box I installed current, and with my trusty, three year old 2Mb Lucent Wavelan pcmcia card, cvsuped, built world, installed XFree86-4 with no problems. Now that the important stuff is working, I've still got a couple of minor issues. I can't see my sound card that according to the docs is an "ess alegro". I have tried the device pcm, pcm + sbc in my kernel config and can't even get an error message :-( cat /dev/sndstat shows no installed devices and pnpinfo responds with "No Plug-n-Play devices were found" I am also not able to get the compaq 100/10 nic to respond. It seems to want to be an SMC card but I'm not sure. I get the following in my dmesg sn0: ioaddr is 0x300 sn0: test1 failed Does anyone have any suggestions or have a similar compaq with sound and/or NIC? I'm really quite glad that I bought it even if sound and NIC don't work. An hour and 15 minute make world is a big improvement over my old k-6's almost 6 hours. A 30 gig hard drive beats 6 gig, as does 256M ram. thanks, ed ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn. --Alvin Toffler To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message
