formulas into several lines, althought I personally hate to do that.

start bc and type the following formula into one single line:

1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1

This one also crashes bc when typed into one line:
1                                                                              +                                                                               1

I downloaded bc-1.05a from ftp.gnu.org and it worked fine.  
Perhaps you could update the version of bc shipped with FreeBSD?
