I'm currently having reasonable success with a Puretek USB webcam as supported by the graphics/vid port (see http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/url.cgi?ports/graphics/vid/pkg-descr) except vid only works if you have a UHCI USB hub (support for vid under an OHCI hub isn't in -stable yet) and large pictures seem overexposed, but that could be my fault. For simple webcam use, it seems to work well though. Try googleing for freebsd and webcam, theres a lot of linux-related material out there so you might try the mailing list archives as well.
