I grabbed the 2.1.7-2.1.7.1.diffs.gz file from ftp.freebsd.org

then uncompressed it then
cd /usr
patch <2.1.7-2.1.7.1.diffs

And it appeared to work.

Then
cd src
make world
make install
cd sys/i386/conf
config MY-SYS
cd ../../compile/MY-SYS
make
make install
reboot.

But it still appears to be 2.1.7.  
What did I miss?
