The fix I used was to go into the Xconfig file (in /etc as I recall) and change the mouse settings, under pointing device section, from the default to "auto" and it worked like a charm from there on. Since you don't say which version of X or the version of FBSD you installed, this may not apply. Hope it will help. Hello - I had to install FBSD w/X = version=20 4.01 I think and had the same probelm.
