For FreeBSD+Apache several 1000-ands is certainly not uncommon. Beyond that is might not make sense, as you will propably hit problems other than related to bandwith, processing and memory limits; which cause you to rethink your management strategy :-) There are several hints on www.apache.org you propably find usefull.
