Horsefeathers. VM mode in emacs is for people who like emacs. It can
fetch from multiple pop, imap and system mailboxes. It runs on the
console. In X it has menus and will use multiple X windows, so you can
view multiple folders - including virtual ones - at a one time.  In
Xemacs you can even get a graphical button bar with pretty icons if
you want it.
