vi can't do syntax highlighting. You're thinking of vim, which can. And if you're from the linux world, most distros even install vim and call it vi as default. Crazy kids. Anyways, FreeBSD's vi is nvi, not vim not any other vi. So if you want syntax highlighting, get vim.
