It's rather one of *the* FAQs these days.  Try


	Section "Keyboard"
	    ...
	    ServerNumLock
	    ...
	EndSection

in your {/etc,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11}/XF86Config file.

It seems that one of the recent changes in XFree86 has caused servers
without ServerNumLock to break.
