you know, your code worked fine but then i tried running the script i had a problem with and the slowdown went away.

how screwed up is that.

It really was a problem for a few weeks though, as I was using a similar script with lprng and the duplex queues which were using a perl filter kept stalling.

anyway, from now on i am going to use perl only when necessary. otherwise: sh.
