the way i understand it is that we (ought to) have one -stable (which
is now on the 2.2. branch) and one -current (now the 3.0 branch).
Releases or snapshots can be done on either tree, in which case
the version number makes the distinction.

I hope we will never have a situation with three main branches as it
was with 2.1 2.2 and 3.0 about this time last year, since it must have
been a nightmare to handle.
