the ssh from ports is not the same as the one in FreeBSDs source code.
OpenSSH (http://www.openssh.org) is compatable with, but not the same as
/usr/ports/security/ssh or /usr/ports/security/ssh2.

what i would suggest doing is using ssh -v and turning on sshd's debugging
features.

does the connection ever time out? how long was it sitting for?
