I think if you have the i830 chipset, you're currently out of luck.  I'm
not speaking definitively here, but I have seen some discussion about
this on current@.  The resident DRM expert, Eric Anholt has a patch at
http://gladstone.uoregon.edu/~eanholt/dri/i810diff that may work for
you. 

Again, I may be talking out my ass here, but I didn't want you
needlessly searching for an answer that wasn't there.
