What would be really useful is what type of IDE controller you have
there. Your machine, a 586-75, is of the right timeframe to have one
of the trouble making IDE controllers, but I've never seen that error
before. People mostly have been complaining about kernel panics when
they have one of the questionable controllers.

See the previous threads from the list, "RZ100 ATA Controller
Problem," and "Problem Booting 4.0R Floppy (ATA Driver?)."

At this point, your options seem to be to not use the IDE controller
or run 3.4.

But like I said, I've not seen a problem like yours before.
