thanks for the former; i have it now & will give it a scan.

i can't report much good from the latter.
at first, "cat /dev/audio >/dev/audio" returned stoney silence.
trying different combinations of mixer settings,
i note that when "mixer pcm" was set to 100,
only "mixer igain" settings produced any output,
and not so encouraging, at that.
essentially, the same noisey output with only a hint of discernable
audio underneath as experienced with 'speak_freely'.

perhaps updated drivers will fare better?
