i think that X 4.x has some things changed in the
place of configuration files, ie, thay moved some
config files to different places...

imho, the best way is to install the X that comes
with freebsd, and then go to XFree86 www page and
get a binary of 4.x for freebsd.

this is the way i did it and took just a few
minutes to install. it sees you old X 3.xxx
config files and moves them or creates links
to new places. it was surprising painless...
