Fuz,

  Okay, I just did a double-check and found some stuff here
(http://www.svgalib.org/svgalib.user.faq.html#q9).  Basically it's
saying you need to be root or the owner of the console (so basically
check the file permissions for the console or make seejpeg setuid root
(be aware of the security risks associated too ;)).
  Hope that's some help - maybe you don't need the VESA things I
mentioned before - sorry!
