Not a bad idea to have configurable core file naming but bear in mind that the format we chose in the first place i.e. progname.core was done after much discussion since /etc/daily or one of the other similar scripts does a spring clean to remove them and if you pick something like core.progname you can end up deleting core.c and so forth. I'd document this issue somewhere, as well as the fact that the cleanup script would have to be aware of the setting.
