I guess this is an ATAPI CDRW drive?  You need to use burncd, not cdrecord.
Although, I think the very latest version of cdrecord supports ATAPI drives
directly, and there is some work going to on to get a SCSI-over-ATAPI layer
working in FreeBSD, so this particular issue should be a thing of the past
soon.
