I can't speak for KDM, but the problem you're seeing with GDM is fixed
in the latest version (2.2.5.4 as of this writing).

You will need to rebuil GNOME from a current ports tree to get GDM
working.  There have been a lot of changes to the GNOME (and KDE for
that matter) components since 4.4-RELEASE.
