It opens /dev/sg**. There's a change somewhere else to manage some 64 and 32 bit compatibility issues I'm going to pull in. No matter how bad Linux can be in many respects, it has market share, and it benefits freebsd to be able to support tools, no matter how broken, from that platform. The reason I also hit this situation is my virtual fake HBA has one test mode where it creates 2000 da devices. That's why I found this funny one for sg. And, it turns out, this is not just a cosmetic issue.
