I've been using Linux and FreeBSD (in that order) for years, but never =
really played much with X. It seems as if my system has decided that's =
the way it's going to stay.
I tried installing 3.3.6 from the install CD (4.4R), but it decided to =
wait several minutes between each "file does not exist" error.

I tried to install X4.2 from ports (gotta have the newest version) and =
after that failed, I later tried downloading the source and making =
"World". Both had similar results:

--------------------------------

Building Release 6.5 of the X Window System.
I hope you checked the configuration parameters in ./config/cf
to see if you need to pass BOOTSTRAPCFLAGS.

Fri Oct 19 23:51:48 MDT 2001
cd ./config/imake && make   -j 4 -f Makefile.ini BOOTSTRAPCFLAGS=3D"" =
CC=3D"cc" clean
rm -f ccimake imake.o imake
rm -f *.CKP *.ln *.BAK *.bak *.o core errs ,* *~ *.a  tags TAGS make.log =
\#*
rm -f -r Makefile.proto Makefile Makefile.dep bootstrap
make   -j 4 Makefile.boot
make: don't know how to make Makefile.boot. Stop
*** Error code 2
1 error
---------------------------------------

"make: don't know how to make Makefile.boot. Stop" seems to be a common =
error between the two methods. I am a clueless newbie with regards to X, =
so I must be doing something wrong.=20

I R'd TFM, looked on Google and on the mailing list archives, but this =
exact error doesn't seem to appear anywhere.

There is nothing particularly unusual about the system. Some =
differences: Bash is the default shell, I CVSUP'd earlier today, =
$CFLAGS=3D"-O2", and I installed just about everything from the CD other =
than the X stuff.

Help?
