I had this couple of times back on 3.3-STABLE I think. With some other app. Pressing ^D made it proceed. IMHO it has to deal with "-pipe" flag to cc. Try to omit the "-pipe" flag in /etc/make.conf and recompile. I don't like it though; it should work ok with the "-pipe" flag. I'm reading my mail sequentally, so it's possible that other people already answered it.
