I think that unless you have a legacy NIS server to support, LDAP is the way to go. "LDAP system administration" from O'Reilly is a good book that tells you how to migrate your users and groups to LDAP and even how to migrate NIS to LDAP. http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/ldapsa/index.html The book is more a practical guide on how to instead of getting lost in technicalities and history.
