Not unless the system getty won't do it, no.  From indications in the
ppp man page, it should do it, and I want to find out what I'm doing
wrong, not just find thick enough wallpaper to hide the mistake.

I need to find why getty is hanging up on me.  Regular logins work
perfectly fine, but a ppp login, with "set login" set to null, makes it
hang up.
