The 390 and 390T use an AMD chipset.  That means they use the amd0 driver,
which is based on the driver that Tekram made available.

The other 390s use the NCR chipset.  That uses thr ncr driver.  The 390F
and U work well for me.  There are cheaper cards with the NCR chipset, but
a lot of them are of low quality.
