This is because the system is in an uninterruptible NFS wait, as requested by your mount options. To understand why this is the default, think of a large network of workstations dependent on a server. Imagine you want to take the server down to work on it for a few hours, but can't do anything about the workstations. With the hard wait, processes on the workstations that depend on the server will just freeze until it comes back, even though that may be hours (or days!).
