This has been my experience, too.  What kind of soundcard do
you have?  Mine is Crystal CS4236B

FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Sep 17 1999 00:55:11
Installed devices:
pcm0: <CS4236B> at io 0x530 irq 5 drq 0:1 (1/1 channels duplex)

My crashes are over an ADSL line from home.
