Quote from Merriam-Webster's:

>Main Entry: Ro=B7mance
>Pronunciation: rO-'man(t)s, r&-; 'rO-"
>Function: adjective
>Date: 1690
>: of, relating to, or being any of several languages developed from Latin
(as Italian, French, and Spanish)=20

Note the capitalization. Used with a lower-case 'r' it means what you
described.
