So, I use a SandyBridge laptop, aside an "ATI Radeon HD 4200" desktop 
and I'd really wish they continued working.
Will the port work like (or better than) the in-kernel driver?

While I wish the answer was "yes", if it's "no", what changes?
I'm not particularly interested in 3D graphics and I favour stability 
over fanciness, but I'd like to know if I should start planning for 
replacements.

I'm only using amd64, not i386.
