In my case, I've been tracking 4-STABLE daily since early March.

I did not see this at all. Indeed, I'm now running:
FreeBSD dhcp-133.catwhisker.org 4.3-STABLE FreeBSD 4.3-STABLE #32: Wed May 30 06:32:29 PDT 2001 root@dhcp-133.catwhisker.org:/common/S2/obj/usr/src/sys/LAPTOP_30W i386

>Any thoughts for a relative newbie on what to do to fix this?

It may be that the "To update from 3.x to 4.x stable" mechansim
(described in /usr/src/UPDATING) would work, though I would think that
the failure you note is not intended. You might want to check the
-stable archives to see if anyone else has reported something similar --
I don't recall any such reports, but my memory gets a bit hazy from time
to time.

Cheers,
david
