The fxp0 is an EtherExpress Pro and his NIC is a much older one. Check
the ie0 device in the LINT and in the HARDWARE.TXT. In the
HARDWARE.TXT it discusses "Intel EtherExpress (8/16,16[TP])". I'm
assuming his NIC is the "16" one covered here.
