this problem manifests itself after about 5 days on a dual proc amd64
system running 5.3R. i'd give the dmesg but it's been overwritten, but
the system is a ibm eseries server.

any ideas how to fix/get around this would be greatly appreciated as
it's hampering stress testing on this system vs a redhat aes server (boo!)
