"Winmodems" lose.  They substitute CPU power for hardware, which means
that they can't work with an operating system: they would need to
block interrupts when they're running.  Considering that the price of
a good modem is so low, nobody can be bothered trying to get such
broken hardware to work under FreeBSD.
