I'm running FreeBSD 2.2.2 with XF86 3.3, using the Xi graphics Accelerated X Server. OK. startx works fine, it runs on ttyv3. When I run xdm, though, I get a login screen, and when I login, xdm shuts down the X server, then restarts it, giving me another login screen. I posted this question to usenet, and got back the answer that there might be something wrong with my .xsession script, ie that >>... if your .xsession ends with something like >>---8<--- >>fvwm & # start fvwm window manager >>--->8--- >>you'll never get a useable session; the script will indeed launch >>fvwm >>(in the background) and then terminate, and xdm will take over again, >>kill all the clients and bring up the login screen. If you delete >>that '&' >>things will work. but I don't have an .xsession in my home directory, so I assume xdm will use /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession. Is this so? and if so, I haven't modified this script, and there are no &'s in it.
