Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Finally got another machine for my wife & kids to use (utopia, 192.168.0.2), & want to connect it to my FreeBSD box (riposte, 192.168.0.1) so that the new machine can access the Internet, and have backup through the DAT tape drive on the FreeBSD box. Unfortunately, I cant ping in either direction. Because of cost, an old message from Mr Smorgrav recommending them, & because my old FreeBSD machine has had past troubles with its PCI slots (couldnt get an early Adaptec 2940 PCI to work, using ISA 1540CP instead), I'm using Kingston KNE20T ISA cards with PnP disabled on the FreeBSD side. Both machines can ping their own interface, but I get 'host unreachable' messages on utopia. The included DOS qstart utility is able to transmit to & receive from the other machine (giving me some confidence that the hub, patch cords, and the NICs are functioning). There's only one media type on this card. I made sure utopia knows its IP address, and that 192.168.0.1 is its default gateway. I checked /etc/host.conf, resolv.conf (contains only nameserver entries for my ISP & work nets), and made entries in /etc/hosts as below. I disabled IP filter, re-enabled inetd, and made entries in rc.conf (& rebooted). I reread the tutorial on user PPP aliasing, netintro(4), etc, without enlightenment. I re-examined hardware settings & dmesg looking for IRQ or port clashes. Wanted to check for past experience, but the mail archive search engine has been down for a while. So how to proceed? Would tcpdump be of any use? Please cc me as I'm not on the list. If it makes a difference, riposte had a binary upgrade from 2.2.7, and has a generic 3.4 kernel.
