You first are a ports maintainer... Just take a look at the
Porter's Handbook (in the FreeBSD documentation project), submit
a few PR's and you're done.

When you have made enough good PR's (several dozens at least),
some committer gets bored with handling your PR and proposes you
to be a committer.

I think it's time to practice with ports now!
