Reads like a small misconfiguration of monitor or wrong answers in the
configuration.

Start windows with "startx > startx.log > 2&>1" to capture your startup
output and check if there are any clues derived from that.

FWIW, I only use the XF86_SVGA driver for my S3's.  Found them to
perform better for me.
