Further examination reveals that it was NOT the PnP changes which
broke the installion in -current and, as my earlier identification of
them as such was in error, I just wanted to take this opportunity to
note that fact that also apologise to Luigi and John-Mark for pointing
the finger in the wrong direction.

It looks like the problem is somewhere else, in the kernel.
