Just talking from experience and yes supporting different chipsets is 
a big undertaking as for the protocol aspects althought difficult 
we can probably tackle them given that we will have access to the 
sources --- it is a bit different to circumvent bugs in planted in
silicon.

At any rate, all this discussion is nice and fun -- I am going back
to hacking 8)
