Given the success I nuked all ports on this machine and started from scratch. There's just one thing that's non-standard about this machine and that's XFree86. I cannot use the port because that version doesn't support my hardware. Instead, I built and installed XFree86 from the official sources. Other than that, everything is "normal". Is there a missing dependency (recent breakage) or is this just a freak interaction with my version of XFree86? This is what I get when building gnome2 (full logs and details are pointed to at the bottom): ===> Extracting for gnome2-2.2.0 : ===> gnome2-2.2.0 depends on file: /usr/X11R6/libexec/cdplayer_applet2 - not found : ===> gnomeapplets2-2.2.0_1 depends on shared library: panel-applet-2.0 - not found : ===> gnomepanel-2.2.0.1_1 depends on shared library: gnome-desktop-2.3 - not found : ===> gnomedesktop-2.2.0.1 depends on shared library: gnomeui-2.200 - not found : ===> libgnomeui-2.2.0.1 depends on shared library: bonoboui-2.0 - not found : ===> libbonoboui-2.2.0 depends on shared library: gnomecanvas-2.200 - not found : ===> Extracting for libgnomecanvas-2.2.0.1 >> Checksum OK for gnome2/libgnomecanvas-2.2.0.1.tar.bz2. ===> libgnomecanvas-2.2.0.1 depends on executable: gmake - found ===> libgnomecanvas-2.2.0.1 depends on executable: libtool - found ===> libgnomecanvas-2.2.0.1 depends on shared library: glade-2.0.0 - found ===> libgnomecanvas-2.2.0.1 depends on shared library: art_lgpl_2.5 - found ===> libgnomecanvas-2.2.0.1 depends on shared library: X11.6 - found ===> Patching for libgnomecanvas-2.2.0.1 ===> Applying FreeBSD patches for libgnomecanvas-2.2.0.1 ===> Configuring for libgnomecanvas-2.2.0.1 checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c -o root -g wheel checking whether build environment is sane... yes : <*snip* -- see full logs> : checking for gmsgfmt... /usr/local/bin/msgfmt checking for xgettext... /usr/local/bin/xgettext checking for catalogs to be installed... am ar az be bg ca da de el es et fi fr he hi hu it ja ko lv mk mn ms nl nn no pl pt pt_BR ro ru sk sl sv ta tr uk vi wa zh_CN zh_TW checking for pkg-config... /usr/local/bin/pkg-config checking for gtk+-2.0 >= 2.0.3 libart-2.0 >= 2.3.8 pango >= 1.0.1 pangoft2 >= 1.0.1... gnome-config: not found gnome-config: not found Package pangoft2 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
