I found that avahi bug ticket, noticed some Linuxes, including Ubuntu, manage to work around the bug.

I guess I'll turn off the avahi option.  What counts is getting the printer to work with hplip.

I might also try to build wine and see if the MS-Windows driver for the printer works that way.
