I just wanted to add that I'm facing the same problem on my iBook G4. Like =

OP said, the radeon driver isn't an option (building x11-drivers/xf86-video=
-ati
says "xf86-video-ati-7.5.0,1 is only for i386 amd64, while you are running
powerpc"), so I'm basically left with the vesa driver (or maybe fbdev? which
doesn't work either; that one says "Module fbdevhw does not have a
fbdevhwModuleData data object"). This laptop has a Radeon 9550 card.
