You can try controller pnp0 device pcm0 in the kernel and do MAKEDEV snd1 (That's snd1 not snd0). For me this worked for SB16 ViBRA16X, ViBRA16C and SB PCI128 with es1370 chip. man pcm is also useful. Good luck, Karel.
