I'm in agreement, if not for the fact it pings id be inclided to  
suggest a disk failure but given that it initially stays up id be more  
inclined to look at something thermal, possibly a failed cpu fan, it  
might be worth seeing it you can have a look at checking any sensors  
on the system to see if that sheds any light on it.
