I agree about the "lossage in performance" and I went back to 3.3.6.  I
was getting a scrambled screen every time I switched from a virtual
console to the X console that lasted for a few seconds.  

I also felt that it was generally a bit slower than 3.3.x, at least when
starting the X server.  I didn't have a problem with hardware, for I have
a well supported Diamond Viper 550.  

I did like the xf86config, as it had a couple more options than earlier
versions, especially being able to choose the default color depth.  Having
only one server for all hardware is also a nice feature, I suppose.
