It doesn't sound particularly like this guy is one to worry about having
his trust. It does put you in a situation where you need to worry about
coming into future conflict with him. If you were ever thinking of doing
any security or networking investigation on this network you better think
again.

Just don't do anything out of the ordinary on his network and if he tries
to blame some network outage on you, make sure to patiently and resposibly
take the issue up with his superior again. Sometime between 1-4 years
from now you'll be out of this school and won't have to deal with him (on
the other hand, he's stuck with the impression of him that you've made
with his superior for as long as he's at this job =)

The thing is that while there is a business need for Microsoft and Novell,
and there could even be a business need for homogenous networks, these
kinds of policies have no place in an education institution. If anything
in an educational institution there is a better (albeit still flawed)
argument that closed source operating systems should be banned from the
network in favor of open source ones.

This administrator needs to go find himself a small office somewhere where
he can implement his policies. Someone's law office or an insurance
agency would be much more amenable to these kinds of policies. In an
educational institution he is instead completely out of touch with the
needs of his clients.
