Try using MS-DOS' FDISK to create your partitions, and see whether 
FreeBSD recognizes the geometry better.  You can either change the 
partition type from FAT to UFS, or else perhaps create a ~20 MB DOS 
partition and try to install FreeBSD in the remaining space.

[ For that matter, make sure that you've disabled any boot sector virus 
checking or protection in the system BIOS. ]
