It just says "open >failed". 0.99.9 works on the same file(s). does file->open show only types `Automatic' and `XCF'? I think that the gimp's not finding the plugins. I had the same problem here. I fixed it by removing ~/.gimp, and letting it re-install whatever it wanted there... Save any patterns/brushes/gradients that you've put there of course.
