The reason why Amanda requires gtar is that our tar is broken.  In
incremental mode (which Amanda uses extensively), it generates
archives that gtar can't read, and sometimes even archives that it
itself can't read.  I reported this about a year, maybe a year and a
half ago; nobody seemed to care.
